EarthSpace educational system

The EarthSpace Educational System is based on the scientific but people-oriented education (SPOE), which is a multidisciplinary global framework that has been tailored to address the needs of specific cultures while forming an interface between science and non-science disciplines. This unique concept combines science, technology, engineering and mathematics with environmental awareness, arts, and humanities (ST[H]EAM). It takes into account the wholeness of people and our increasingly global environment (Faiyetole et al., 2011; Faiyetole, 2008).

The Young EarthSpace Scientists (yess!)

The Young EarthSpace Scientists program was conceived in 2003 in Strasbourg, working on a 7-man team to reform the Young Lunar Explorers group within the framework of International Lunar Exploration Working Group. The concept came clearer while serving as a national coordinator for education and public outreach of UN’s International Heliophysical Year program, participating at the 2006 Fall Meeting of the AGU in San Francisco. YESS! crystallized while attending the first Heliophysics School-Visiting Scientists Program, organized by NASA and hosted by University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, in 2007.

The research phase of YESS! continued in Nigeria, with scientific space education and outreach programs for schools in Lagos, and Ogun States in 2007. In collaboration with Stanford Solar Center in Palo Alto, the YESS! program developed on scientific but people-oriented education, incorporating science, technology, humanities, engineering, art, and mathematics, as well as environmental conservation was formally inaugurated in Nigeria on 10 October 2007.

The vision is to develop, educate and train future earth and space scientists, non-scientists and environment-aware leaders based on the scientific but people-oriented education.

The mission is to inspire students to pursue scientific careers (science, technology, engineering & mathematics, as well as environmental conservation), and to help them recognize the interrelationships of scientific and non-scientific fields using an earth and space exploration paradigm.
